Understanding Thalassemia
A lifelong battle against an inherited blood disorder.
What is Thalassemia?
Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that affects the body's ability to produce normal hemoglobin—the critical protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to organs. People with Thalassemia (especially Beta Thalassemia Major) produce little to no healthy hemoglobin.
Without adequate hemoglobin, red blood cells die prematurely, leading to severe, chronic anemia. Because it is an inherited condition, it is passed from parents to children through genes and is often diagnosed in the first year of life.
The Clinical Reality
- Transfusion Dependency: Patients require packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusions every 15-21 days just to survive and grow.
- Iron Overload: Frequent blood transfusions cause toxic iron to build up in the heart and liver, requiring expensive, daily Iron Chelation Therapy.
- Prevention: If both parents are Thalassemia Minor (carriers), there is a 25% chance their child will have Thalassemia Major.
Single Donor Platelets (SDP)
Apheresis is a special kind of blood donation that allows a donor to give specific blood components, such as platelets, while returning the remaining components back into their body. This process is critical for treating patients with life-threatening illnesses.
Why SDP is Critical
- Dengue & Fever Patients: Severe cases cause platelet counts to plummet dangerously low, leading to internal bleeding. SDP acts as an instant, concentrated lifesaver.
- Cancer & Leukemia: Chemotherapy destroys healthy bone marrow. SDP provides the necessary clotting factors so patients survive their treatment.
- Higher Concentration: 1 Single Donor Platelet (SDP) bag is equivalent to 6 to 8 Random Donor Platelet (RDP) bags derived from whole blood.
The Apheresis Process
The procedure is extremely safe and takes about 60 to 90 minutes. A sterile, single-use kit connects you to an apheresis machine. The machine gently draws blood, centrifuges it to extract only the platelets, and safely returns your red blood cells and plasma back to you.
Your body replenishes the donated platelets within just 48 hours, meaning you can donate SDP up to 24 times a year!
